Jean was born in North Wales in 1964. The following year her parents retired to Nassau in
the Bahamas where she spent the first nine years of her life enjoying the sand and surf in
an idyllic tropical paradise. Jean came to Australia in 1974.
At the age of nine, Jean began painting using oil on canvas. By fifteen, she was an
understudy to Vincent Hesse (one of the panel chosen to restore 'The Last Supper'.) More
recently she has studied with notable artists including Robert Munn and Herman Pekel.
At the age of 15, she won her first major award. There have been many prestigious awards
since, including a 'Highly Commended' in the Maroochy Arts Festival in 1999 and the $5,000
Commonwealth Bank People's Choice Award in the 2000 Sunday Mail Art Show.
Jean's painting of a Poinsettia was awarded second prize in a floral competition conducted
by the Australian Artist Magazine.
Being exhibited in the Archibald Portraiture Competition is one of Jean's goals. She has
submitted entries for the last two years and her subject for this year's portrait is body
language expert Allan Pease and his wife Barbara.
ean is a versatile artist. She is equally comfortable with impressionistic and abstract
paintings. The beach features heavily in Jean's paintings with the strong, vibrant,
ever-changing colours of the sand, sea and sky displaying the beauty of the Sunshine
Coast.
