Jane Welsh, born in Ireland in 1970, moved to Brisbane in early highschool years. Soon after her passion for art grew, excelling in art in her senior high school years. However she decided to take the “safe option” and studied and worked as a dietitian/nutritionist, mostly in Aboriginal communities. But she knew deeply within her soul and bones that she was an artist and took the plunge 8 years ago to support herself from her art alone. This coincided with her move to the Sunshine Coast and she now resides on acreage in Verrierdale (between Noosa and Eumundi) with her partner, two young chidlren and her delighful new studio set among permaculture gardens. She is self taught, relying on her talent and drive to continually experiment and find new ways of expression in a variety of mediums.
In the last 8 years she has been very busy, becoming well known for her striking commissioned portraits created using the natural beauty of the Sunshine Coasts beaches as her backdrop. Sitting comfortably beside these photo realistic portraits are an eclectic mix of strong abstracts using nature as her inspiration, sumptuous nudes and flowing figurative sculptures in both wood and clay. She paints mostly in oils and pastels and has won a variety of competitions and commendations.
Jane’s current work is returning to her first love, sculpture. Capturing feelings of joy, love, intimacy, hope and fun, in a stylised and semi abstract way in glazed clay, she has recently been collecting awards and significant recognition for her new musically inspired Melody” series and more stylized “Unity” series.
“My aim is to create beauty, which I believe nurtures our soul. This is precious in a society that places so much emphasis on busy-ness of mind and body” says Jane. She hopes to inspire feelings of elation and freedom, and feedback from recent clients who have bought her sculptures confirm her success.
“Sculpture is a much more challenging and time consuming medium than painting, as I strive to create beauty from every angle. Its well worth it though, as it means there is so much more beauty to be enjoyed as you appreciate the piece from many different angles”.
Her work can be found in numerous national and international private art collections.
