The Sculpting Journey
Ever since picking up the mallet and chisel in the summer of 1997, my sculptural journey has been characteristic of my connection to the space occupied by stone.
My choice of marble was essential for the artistic process. The medium is the essence of my ideas and commitment to sculpture. I have an enormous affinity for marble and I passionately love it’s inherent beauty. One has to be prepared to offer a large sacrifice in order to experience the euphoria when the beauty is revealed.
My sculpting effort is directed towards creating space and emptiness with an emphasis on tension. Capturing tension in my sculpture is a very important part of the process. Having caught the attention of the viewer with the connection to the action, then the tension will begin to tease the viewer’s emotions. My preference is to create intimacy and hence my sculptures are mostly of table-top size. On many an occasion the outcome is that the sculpture is looking at the viewer.
My early pieces were female figurative with an abstract format. My designs have become somewhat more abstract as can be seen in the Lover Series . The piece I consider to reflect my passions is Ice Ballet, Italian Bianca-P marble, 2002. The sculpture displays space, tension and emotion.
